The first hours after a crash are stressful, but a few steps can protect your health and your claim.
At the scene
- Move to safety if you can and turn on your hazard lights.
- Call 911. Florida requires reporting crashes involving injury, death, or apparent damage of $500 or more.
- Exchange names, phone numbers, insurance and plate numbers with the other drivers.
- Photograph vehicles, plates, the road, signals, skid marks and your injuries.
- Get witness names and phone numbers.
- Do not argue about fault or apologize; stick to facts.
In the next 14 days
- Get a medical evaluation. Under Florida's PIP law, initial treatment generally must happen within 14 days.
- Notify your insurance company promptly.
- Request the crash report (see our crash report guide).
- Start a folder for bills, receipts, mileage to appointments and missed work.
Things to avoid
- Giving a recorded statement to the other driver's insurer before getting advice.
- Signing medical authorizations or releases you do not understand.
- Posting about the crash or your injuries on social media.
- Waiting: evidence like video footage disappears quickly.
When to talk to an attorney
Talk to an attorney if you were hurt, if fault is disputed, if a commercial vehicle or rideshare was involved, or if an insurer has denied or delayed your claim. Requesting a free consultation costs nothing and creates no obligation.

Frequently asked questions
Should I call the police for a minor crash?
If anyone is hurt, or damage appears to be $500 or more, Florida law requires a report. A police report also helps document what happened.
What if I feel fine after the crash?
Get checked anyway. Some injuries show up days later, and the 14-day PIP rule applies.
