When the at-fault driver drives away, many people assume there is no one to claim against. That is often not true. Your own insurance, especially uninsured motorist (UM) coverage, may step in.
Coverage that may apply
Your PIP pays first for part of your medical bills and lost wages, regardless of fault. If you carry UM coverage, it can cover damages the fleeing driver would have owed, such as pain and suffering for serious injuries. UM can also follow you as a pedestrian or passenger, depending on your policy.

Report it right away
Florida law requires drivers involved in injury crashes to stop. A victim should call 911, ask for a crash report, and give police everything remembered about the vehicle. A partial plate, color, make and direction of travel all help. Many UM policies require prompt reporting, so do not wait.
Find the footage
Gas stations, storefronts, buses and homes with doorbell cameras may have captured the vehicle. Footage is often erased within days, so ask businesses near the scene quickly or let an attorney send preservation requests.

Frequently asked questions
What if police never find the driver?
You may still recover through PIP and UM coverage. Finding the driver is not required to make a UM claim, but prompt reporting usually is.
Does a hit-and-run raise my premiums?
Not-at-fault claims generally should not be held against you, but policy terms vary. Ask your agent or attorney.
